Come and create your own edible garden containers out of recycled materials with permaculturalists, Nova and Leanne.

Ever wonder how to grow your own food in small spaces at home? Or do you have a hot sunny patio or dark shady basement suite and don’t know what to grow there? Leanne and Nova will show you that you can have fun gardening in all sorts of areas and containers at a very low cost. Learn how to plant your own starters and seeds in creative containers for your own unique growing space. Learn about companion planting and ways to minimize water usage.

All participants will be provided with a container to plant at the workshop and take home. We will provide seeds and starters, soil, and loaner tools for you to use.

Note: In addition to the container we provide you, feel free to bring your own small container that you can plant and take home. Some ideas: mason jars, flower vases, wooden kitchen bowls or a recycled plant pot. See you there!

Workshop Leaders:

Nova is a visual storyteller who helps good people do cool things. As a BC artist, graphic designer and permaculturalist, she believes in helping others by inspiring neighbours and communities to come together through the connection of nature, place-making and food. Nova is a member of the Burnaby Food First Gardening Committee and the Fraser Valley Permaculture Guild; she also works with a local organic farmer and can be found at farmers markets selling local veggies.

Leanne Zmud is a certified Permaculture Designer and enthusiastic gardener, who is passionate about promoting food security. Her interest in sustainable food systems and community engagement was sparked, as she focused on urban planning while completing her geography degree at Simon Fraser University. She works with Burnaby Food First to promote food security, participates in community gardens in addition to her home gardening endeavours  and can be found working at the various farmers’ markets. Leanne believes “Plant happiness; Spaces into places”.

11:00 am—12:00 pm | Making Homes for Mason Bees Workshop
Free, no registration required. Just drop by! Demonstration Style Workshop.

Learn all about the most efficient pollinator in the Lower Mainland, the blue orchard mason bee. Build simple homes to attract these solitary, non-aggressive insects to take up residence in your garden. Talk about some issues effecting bee populations in the Pacific Northwest and learn how you can help one of the most efficient pollinators in BC. Buzz on by!

Workshop Leader:

Erin Udal coordinates the 'Planning for Pollinators' program at the Environmental Youth Alliance. With her background in conservation biology, Erin’s passion and curiosity for exploring the natural world has lead her to the fascinating world of bees. Erin is making our backyards and parks places we can support and learn about bees and pollination.

Feature: Wheely Slow Cooking Tour

When Vancouver-raised musician Julia Spitale set out on a tour with fellow musician Shera Kelly and documentary film-maker Jessica Gates last June to perform music, cook, and interview farmers, there was every intention to return home after the tour. The three women, who not only visited typical venues such as bars and cafés but also less conventional venues like farms and homes, found a community of farmers eager to share their stories and experiences -- and their original plan to document sustainable farms and local food practices across Canada blossomed into the Wheely Slow Cooking Tour.

At each of their stops, they asked for a favourite recipe and cooked together with their guests. Soon, they were receiving invites to homes and farms all across Canada and even turning down offers due to their busy schedule. In total, they visited over 30 communities from Salt Spring to Halifax in less than two months!

Now back in Vancouver, the women are eager to share what they learned and have posted webisodes of the journey on their website. Drop by and watch their interviews with farmers, see the recipes they collected, and learn how the tour unfolded.

To top off the currently scheduled 2012 dates, the Wheely Slow Cooking Tour will be appearing at the Sustenance Festival on October 18, 2012, at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
