So
why is one out of 3 children in Canada overweight or obese?

It’s not surprising that the main cause of this crisis is unhealthy
eating, and doctors and other health care professionals think junk food
advertising aimed directly at kids is a key culprit.

Right now, we’re very close to having a law that can protect
children. If the Senate votes in favour of Bill S-228, The Child Health Protection Act, advertising
to children 12 and under will be restricted.

But insistent industry lobbying has some senators dragging their feet, and if this bill isn’t
approved this month, it will most likely die.

You can help Bill S-228 become law. Take action and
tell senators you think it’s important to protect kids’ health. The Stop Marketing to Kids
Coalition has website resources that make it easy to contact members of the
Senate, and you can send an email right now by clicking here.

We have a public health crisis. Overweight and obese children are at
risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and 13 different cancers. Without
intervention, obese children become obese adults.

And obesity hits all Canadians. Estimates of the economic
burden of obesity in Canada range from $4.6 billion to $7.1 billion
annually.

Ads are everywhere in the
digital age. Companies still use old-fashioned advertising like radio and
television to push food that has too much sugar, sodium (salt) and saturated fat
to children. But there are many more ways to market junk food.

Even very small children are exposed to advertising like
brands and logos in video games and websites. Each year, the top 10 favourite
websites for kids between the ages of 2 and 11 have approximately 25
million food/beverage ads. Most – a whopping 90%
<span style="font-family: "symbol"; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Symbol;">- of the food marketed to
Canadian children is high in sugar, sodium and fat.

Time is Running Out "The Senate needs to pass
Bill S-228 as soon as possible to ensure that regulations are drafted before
the next federal election, or we risk forever losing this opportunity to
protect our children," says Dr. Tom Warshawski,
a<span style="background: white; color: #373737; font-family: "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> pediatrician
and Chair of the Childhood Obesity Foundation.

The Child Health Protection Act was introduced in the Senate
in September 2016. Since then, Bill S-228 has been studied and approved by the Senate
and our elected representatives in the House of Commons.

The legislation was passed to the Senate for final approval in
the fall of 2018. Since October, Bill
S-228 has been raised on the Senate
floor four times, and each time, a different senator has moved that it
be adjourned.

Why is this happening? Food and beverage industries,
along with retailer and advertising associations, are working hard to make sure
Bill S-228 doesn’t become law. Seventy-nine industry representatives have
lobbied around Bill S-228, and 233 industry meetings with government officials
have been documented.

Advertisers and the food and beverage industry in Canada are
worried
that restricting advertising to children will reduce profits. Children have
“pester power,” and a large influence on how parents buy.

Leaders from the food industry and retail and advertising
organizations have written
to senators asking them to “withhold their concurrence,” from the bill, so
it won’t become law. Some senators are obliging them.

Let’s Put Children’s Health Before Profit. <span style="color: #373737; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Bill S-228 “is a bill
designed to protect kids. To protect kids from consuming at an early age —
those kids particularly under 12 — drinks and food that could potentially
be harmful to them. We know that this is done in the context of a public health
crisis in Canada resulting from the consumption of foods that are high in
saturated fats, sugar and salt.” (The Honourable Tony Dean, Senator, supporter

The economy was focused on the war effort, and every household felt the impact. One of these impacts was on food. Food needed to be shipped to soldiers and, in WWII, to the people of Britain. Slogans such as, “Serve apples daily and you serve your country too,” urged Canadians to eat “patriotic” foods that were not needed for shipping overseas.

Many citizens ignored the government and turned their yards into gardens. Soon, 3.59% of milk in Canada will come from the United States. This is a result of the new US—Mexico—Canada trade agreement. Dairy farmers in Canada are very concerned about the impact this will have on their incomes and the future for small dairy farms in our country.

Monsanto, a huge agricultural chemical company (now owned by Bayer), developed rBGH to increase the amount of milk that dairy cows produce. Cows that are injected with this growth hormone can produce 5% to 15% more milk. This sounds like a good thing, right?

Well, for cows, not so much. Twenty years ago, rBGH was banned from use in Canada mostly because of the health impact on dairy cows. Cows injected with rBGH have higher rates of painful udder infections and lameness, and they live shorter lives. As well, the udder infection (mastitis) is treated with antibiotics, a small amount of which may end up in the milk.

What about human health? There still isn’t enough research to say for sure if it causes long-term health problems or if it’s safe. There is some evidence that rBGH is linked to some types of cancer, but there has not been enough research to say for sure. Many countries, including all countries in the European Union, have banned the use of rBGH.

And if we don’t know for sure, it makes sense to be careful. Over a life time, people drink a lot of milk, and there have been no long-term studies of rBGH.

Fewer dairy farms in the US are using rBGH than a decade ago. This is mostly because the public and organizations like the American Humane Society don’t support it. (The American Medical Association withdrew its statement that rBGH was OK, and now does not have a policy position on the issue.) Most people want to drink milk that's free of rBGH.

Right now, the milk from cows that have been injected with growth hormones doesn’t have to be labelled. Monsanto fought hard to stop labelling in the US by lobbying government and by launching lawsuits. This means that if you’re buying milk that comes from the US, you may not be able to tell if it’s rBGH-free.

But there’s an easy fix: just make sure you buy milk from Canadian dairies, the same ones you’re buying from now.

Food is secure when communities control it. That means having control over what’s grown, how it’s grown and how it’s distributed. It’s not ok for the government to give away control of what’s in the milk we buy, even if it’s only some of the milk. You can let the government know how you feel about this issue by telling your Member of Parliament.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are 3 possible reasons you're wasting food.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Buying the right amount of food takes meal planning, but you're too busy to plan meals for the week.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> - Whether you live alone or are in a household with two working adults, there's no one at home with the time to plan and organize.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - You may be working long hours or more than one job because your wages are not keeping up with living costs.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. You can't always have regular, sit-down meals.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - The Vanier Institute of the Family fact sheet, Time to Eat, tells us that eating patterns have changed. Busy schedules and responsibilities with family and friends mean more meals are 'on-the-go.' It's hard to plan meals when you don't know who will be home.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Our society encourages everyone to buy, buy, buy with little thought to the resources we are using. That's a mindset that encourages you to overbuy instead of being careful to select only what you need.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> - According to research, stores encourage us to buy more than we need with bulk buying, two-for-one deals, and family-pack sale prices. These only save you money if you meal plan, store carefully, or make meals ahead and freeze them. Again, time and planning are needed.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you'd rather have money in your pocket than in the compost bucket, here are some suggestions.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Don’t shop when you are hungry. Grocery stores are designed with certain items at eye level and sales that encourage shoppers to buy more than they need. Don’t fall for it! Shop with a list and stick to it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Learn how to store food. Did you know that you can just pop a whole tomato into the freezer? And eggs can be frozen too (see below).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Use your nose. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dates on grocery items are confusing and can mislead. If milk doesn’t smell or taste sour, it’s still good to drink. This website might be helpful: <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">www.stilltasty.com

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Plan your meals. Short-term pain for long-term gain. Hint: make a list of the meals you cook often, and then make a grocery list for each meal. If there are 14 meals you frequently make, you can shop and cook them on a rotating schedule. Meal planning made simple!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Use Leftovers. A chicken dinner one night can be chicken salad for lunch or a dinner burrito the next day. There are lots of ideas on the internet. Here’s one site with suggestions <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Find out how to use parts of food we often throw out. Again, there are lots of ideas on the internet, like carrot top pesto. Using as much as possible of the food you buy means you have to buy less.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And finally, compost your food scraps. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, you can compost. The Municipality of Burnaby collects food scraps, and it's turned into compost for gardens. This keeps landfill costs down, saves money on property taxes, and saves the environment at the same time.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Food waste is a problem that can be solved.

Doing our best to avoid food waste in our homes will make an important contribution to our wallets and to the environment.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: 36pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: 36pt;">But because more than half of food waste occurs before it reaches kitchens, the problem needs to be addressed on many levels. Tackling food waste involves roles for governments, food growers, processors, distributors and grocery stores.

<span style="color: blue; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: 36pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are many ways that all sources of food waste can be addressed. For example, growing, storing and distributing food could be more local, so food reaches you sooner and doesn’t spoil. Labels on food packages could give information about how to best freeze food if you can’t use it all. Dates on packaging could be clear about what stamps like “best before” really mean.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">More grocery stores and restaurants could donate food to groups that make it available to people with low incomes. <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Quest, SFU <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Embark and the <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Greater Vancouver Food Bank are three organizations in Burnaby that make grocery store donations available to households.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And part of the big picture is to see food waste in the context of larger social issues, like creating working conditions and wages that give people more time, and changing the way we think, so we buy what we need and our planet can bear.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are many ways that all sources of food waste can be addressed. Good thing we can start today.

locally grown food now is good for our future.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In recent years, there’s been a lot of news
about bees dying and the threat to global food crops. Is this a real threat in
Canada?

<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A whopping 90%
of plants that produce food need to be pollinated. Who are the
pollinators? Any insect or animal that carries pollen from one plant to
another. That includes bees, wasps, flies and, yes, even mosquitoes. Bats and
hummingbirds are pollinators too.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">William Husby is a BC entomologist – an insect expert to
the lay person. He says that in Canada, like other countries, there has been a
drastic decrease in the number of pollinators. A recent study in Germany
reported a 75% decline in flying insects. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Husby says this is likely the case in Canada as whole,
too, although in more natural areas with a greater variety of plants, the
decline can be much less.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to Husby, biodiversity is key. Natural
environments with many types of plants
are the best ones to support pollinators. The lack of plants in cities is one
challenge to keeping pollinators alive and doing their good work. Another
problem is large-scale agriculture because it depends on pesticides, particularly
bee-killing neonicotinoids.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What can each of us do to help pollinators? Well, the good news is that
you don’t have to have a bee hive in your back yard. In fact, you don’t even
need to have a yard. There are about 450 different types of bees that are
native to BC, and they don’t live in hives.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Native bees fly alone and will find your blooms wherever they are. And
native bees are more efficient pollinators than honey bees, which are not
native. A single native bee can pollinate as much as half an entire honeybee hive,
according to Husby. “When it’s raining, native bees keep pollinating while
honeybees are back at the hive with their feet up, sitting in front of the
fire.”

Visiting Vancouver Island anytime soon? If so, swing by the Cowichan Valley, otherwise known as the 'New Provence' for its wealth of wineries, small organic farms, and burgeoning local-food culture.

Part of this vibrant scene is our fellow food-security society, Cowichan Green Community, which is a community non-profit that has been focusing on environmental sustainability in the Cowichan Region since 2004. For the last six years CGC’s mandate has revolved mainly around improving food security by developing strong relationships with local food producers and increasing urban and rural food production.

One of their many efforts is The Garden Pantry store that showcases the work of Island artisans and specialty food producers.

See you there!
