Disaster Chef Cooking Contest and Market on Wheels

Are you itching to exercise your creative hand in the kitchen?

If you're looking for a challenge, the Disaster Chef Cooking Contest, which started earlier this week, challenges Burnaby residents to create and prepare recipes for three one-person meals using just two litres of water and the non-perishable food items in their emergency supplies kit.

Five finalists will be invited to compete in a cooking contest on October 17, 2013, aired live on CityTV's Breakfast Television. The winner will be chosen by celebrity judges including Dan Craig (ebo Restaurant) and Hugh Izumi (Riverway Clubhouse).

The contest runs from August 20, 2013 to September 9, 2013.

On a separate note...

Last month, the Westside Mobile Food Market rolled out for the first time.

The first of its kind, this non-profit program brings fresh food to seniors who have difficulty accessing fresh produce. Due to mobility issues and limited budgets, seniors and people in other vulnerable groups can experience difficulty accessing fresh food.

The concept behind the program is to help tackle the problem of food deserts in the Vancouver Westside -- zones with few, inadequate, or no grocery stores or produce stands. Some neighbourhoods in this area, for example, do not have even a single grocery store within their boundaries.

If you would like to learn more about the Mobile Food Market or visit the market until it ends in September, please contact the Westside Mobile Food Market project coordinator Annie Lambla at (778) 319-4199 or send an email.
